The only way an external ide->USB connector would work would be if the connector had some sort of external power connector plus the data connector to the drive. In any case you still need to attach an IDE data cable to the MOBO unless you have a powered IDE->USB box with all the electronics inside Attach the drive to the VM Guest as a "Physical drive".
